Story
Spanning four tumultuous decades during The Troubles in Northern Ireland
The real-life Dolours Price was married for two decades (1983-2003) to Irish actor Stephen Rea. During that period, Rea appeared in the film for which she is perhaps best known in the United States: the 1992 romantic thriller The Crying Game. In that film, Rea played Fergus, an extremely reluctant and ambiguous member of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) – the same organization with which Price had been involved for many years. As Episode 1 of Say Nothing (broadcast in 2024 from the UK; 9 episodes, ranging from 41 to 50 minutes each) begins, it is "Belfast 1972" and we are reminded that it is "Based on a true story".
We don’t know why or who took her
A woman is taken from her home, leaving her children behind. Then we go to "Dublin, Ireland, 29 Years Later" and we meet. Dolours Price. She’s about to be interviewed as part of an oral history of the Troubles.
We’re 10 minutes into Episode 1 at this point
A few comments: there have been plenty of movies and TV series and documentaries about the Troubles before, but I don’t remember ever seeing anything like Say Nothing that brings the 3 decades that were the Troubles to life with a fresh perspective. The series follows a few events and jumps back and forth in time, but somehow brings the main themes of the Troubles into clearer perspective than ever before. While the differences and battles between the Protestants/British Army vs. the Catholics/Irish certainly get a lot of attention, less obvious issues like the IRA missing are also included.
Warning: this miniseries is not for the faint of heart
There are some solid performances from the cast, none more so than Lola Petticrew as Dolours. By the end of it all, I felt like I had been emotionally traumatized. This miniseries is gripping from start to finish, even if some moments are uncomfortable. (As an aside, within minutes of watching Episode 1, I realized I needed English subtitles because I was missing about half of what I was hearing (Northern Irish accents and all…) Say Nothing started streaming on Hulu a week ago, and I read a positive review of it in the New York Times, and then I realized it was currently rated 91% Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and for good reason.
