A person filing Form 1040-NR can’t file a joint return. If you want your refund mailed outside the United States to an address not listed on page 1 of Form 1040-NR, enter that address on line 35e. See Foreign Address, earlier, for information on entering a foreign address. The Injured Spouse discussion doesn’t apply to you.
When Do I Need To File a 1040-NR Form?
The only reason none of your refund would be taxable is, if in the year you paid the state or local income tax, you didn’t claim these tax payments as an itemized deduction on Schedule A (Form 1040-NR). If you received interest not effectively connected with a U.S. trade or business, report it on Schedule NEC (Form 1040-NR) unless it’s tax exempt under a treaty and the withholding agent didn’t withhold tax on the payment. If the interest is tax exempt under a treaty, include the tax-exempt amount on line 1k and complete item L of Schedule OI (Form 1040-NR). If the interest is tax exempt under a treaty but the withholding agent withheld tax, report the interest on Schedule NEC (Form 1040-NR), line 2. Use column d and show 0% for the appropriate rate of tax. You can download the complete text of most U.S. tax treaties at IRS.gov.

With an online account, you can access a variety of information to help you during the filing season. You can get a transcript, review your most recently filed tax operating cash flow return, and get your adjusted gross income. Create or access your online account at IRS.gov/Account.

If you incurred expenses in conjunction with this income, you may be able to deduct those expenses in Line 24b, later. For example, if you are a race horse owner, but do not have a for profit business, you might enter any income from horse races during the year. If you participated in an activity, but not for profit, enter any income you received as a result of that activity. If the Box 1 number is incorrect, only report the actual amount of unemployment compensation you received during the year. We must also tell you what could happen if we do not receive it and whether your response is voluntary, required to obtain a benefit, or mandatory under the law. Enter the amount of the aggregate effectively connected unrecaptured section 1250 gain that would be recognized on the deemed sale of section 1(h)(6) gain assets from Schedule K-3 (Form 1065), Part XIII, line 5.
However, neither spouse can deduct more than $300 of their qualified expenses on Line 11. If you were an eligible educator during the tax year, you can deduct up to $300 of qualified expenses you paid during the taxable year. Enter the total in Line 10, and on Line 8 of your federal tax return. Use this line to report any taxable income not reported elsewhere on your return or other schedules. In Line 8s, enter the nontaxable amount of Medicaid waiver payments included on Line 1a or Line 1d of your Form 1040.
IRS Form 8978 Instructions
Enter the amount that you received as a pension or annuity from a nonqualified deferred compensation plan or a nongovernmental 457 plan. For example, you would report grants that you received to offset room, board, and travel expenses on Line 8r. In Line 8p, enter the amount of your excess business loss from IRS Form 461, Line 16. These amounts should be reported to direct materials efficiency variance managerial accounting you in Box 3 of Form 1099-MISC.

If you were a resident alien on the last day of the tax year and you’re filing Form 1040 or 1040-SR, include the tax on the noneffectively connected income on Schedule 2 (Form 1040), line 17o. If you file for a nonresident alien estate or trust that has an office in the United States, file the return by the 15th day of the 4th month after the tax year ends. If you file for a nonresident alien estate or trust that does not have an relationship between sales and purchase discount office in the United States, file the return by the 15th day of the 6th month after the tax year ends. These are valuable deductions for many taxpayers for two reasons. First, these deductions directly reduce your adjusted gross income, opening up the possibility of taking other deductions and receiving tax credits that have adjusted gross income limits.
Who needs to file Form 1040-NR?
You don’t have to file Form 8833 for any of the following. Social security beneficiaries can get a variety of information from the SSA website with a my Social Security account, including getting a replacement Form SSA‐1099 or Form SSA-1042S if needed. You may be able to deduct part or all of each loss caused by theft, vandalism, fire, storm, or similar causes; car, boat, and other accidents; and corrosive drywall.

If you owe this tax, you must attach a statement to your return that includes the information described in chapter 4 of Pub. If you’re filing for a qualified disability trust (defined in section 642(b)(2)(C)(ii)), enter $4,700 on line 13b.
