Story

The trio worked together, but alone, trying to uncover some grand conspiracy

This 6-part Netflix spy thriller promised a lot, but ultimately fell short of what it could have been. With a stellar cast including Keira Knightley as the ninja-kicking, gun-throwing action hero, and Ben Whishaw as her former mentor and current colleague, expectations were high. They are both operatives of the Black Doves, a top-secret mercenary espionage organization controlled by Sarah Lancashire, who are doing everything they can to keep Judi Dench’s "M" impersonating a hideous platinum blonde in a wig. It certainly starts off with a bang as we see three young people being killed in central London.

Sharply directed with star-studded A-listers, it somehow failed me

A separate plot twist involves the death of China’s ambassador to Britain, whose party central daughter has also inconveniently disappeared, threatening all manner of international political discord. It’s no big surprise that these two developments later converge, both stories overlapping with the actions of Knightley and Wishaw, especially since she’s not only married to the government’s defense minister, but herself. Caught up in the political fallout over the ambassador’s death, she also had a passionate affair with one of the three initially killed. other characters are brought into the kaleidoscopic narrative as Knightley and Whishaw are drawn deeper and deeper into an increasingly unfathomable plot, while mountainous proportions build up around and around them, sometimes in their arms, while Whishaw still has time to rekindle an old romance.

early promise, flying away in a congested plot that relied too much on coincidence, gun violence, and quirky, offbeat characters

When everything was resolved at the end I felt it fell somewhere between James Bond type fantasy and Le Carre type realism, unfortunately escapism won out in the end. When I started watching it I had the desire almost the first time I watched the rest of the episodes it seemed fine, but around episode 4 I’m afraid there were cracks that no amount of snappy dialogue and quick banter could make up for (and there were some good ones). It was tense and exciting again, even if it relied heavily on exposition and didn’t seem to know when to stop. It did eventually happen though, and even had a «Die Hard» kind of Christmas time tie-in, but in the end it all felt too contrived, convoluted and confusing to really work for me.
