Story
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with presiding over one of the world’s most secret and ancient events, the selection of a new Pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. Sister Agnes: Although we sisters should be invisible, God has given us eyes and ears. Overall, a very good film that makes good use of the talents of the cast and crew.
Very accessible presentation
It adds many nice elements to the interest and fun, e.g. lines in Latin with English subtitles. I especially liked the sound work as the lines were easier to hear and understand than in many other recent films and the score was very effective.
A bolder and more realistic depiction would be an interesting alternative here
The characters and staging may have been cleaned up a bit to appeal to a wider audience. This film should be especially entertaining for those interested in the evolution of the papacy through new popes, showing the changing understanding of how to interpret the teachings of Christ in the modern world. Be sure to check it out if you have strong opinions about the decisions the Church makes in choosing popes.
This movie is more about intrigue and Machiavellian behavior in the College of Cardinals
Non-Catholics will also enjoy this insight into how the sausage is made, and we don’t often see this inside perspective. The only comparable film recently was «The Two Popes», which was a more heartfelt story. The climax of the plot is near the end, but it is worth the wait and is quite unpredictable.
