01 Oct The World Uses a Variety of Different Energy Sources
The world relies on a variety of energy sources. Fossil fuels — including natural gas, oil and coal–accounted for over 81 percent of all energy consumed in 2018. Renewables, like solar power, wind power, hydroelectricity and biomass, account for 14 percent. Nuclear energy is responsible for another five percent. Different countries employ different energy sources to balance environmental and economic requirements.
Nature’s energy comes in many forms such as wind, sun, waves, and ocean. When harnessed and converted into more convenient forms of energy, such as heat or electricity, these are called primary sources. When these energy sources are exhausted, they turn into non-renewable energy sources.
The environment is harmed due to a wide range of fossil fuels and also other energy sources that aren’t renewable. For example, mining for oil can degrade the world’s forests. Hydraulic fracture (fracking) can cause earthquakes as well as water pollution. Carbon dioxide is released when coal is burnt which contributes to global warming.
Fortunately, a lot of the most promising sources of energy are renewable and sustainable. Hydropower, wind and solar for instance, can produce electricity without the need to search for new resources.
Other sustainable energy sources are gaining momentum, such as the wave and tidal power. However, to be used in a large-scale manner these technologies require effective distribution networks. This requires the use of non-renewable energy sources to construct these networks. These sources are not able to fulfill the majority of our energy demands. It’s important to remember that the cost of renewable energy equipment have decreased dramatically in recent times and the efficiency of these equipments is growing.
