He returns to Saint-Martial for the funeral of his late boss, Jérémie. When she stays with the widow, Martine becomes embroiled in a disappearance, a menacing neighbor, and the dark intentions of an abbot… the film was sprawling. It was predicted to be in the official competition of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, but was instead placed in the sidebar of the Cannes premiere. Misericordia takes its time with filming, and when it starts shooting, it puts a smile on your face until it winces at the final shot. The film is laced with very light humor, telling the story of a quiet man who travels to a village to attend the funeral of a mentor. There he meets his mentor’s wife, son, and a priest – all of whom seem to be saying something different than what is on their minds. What I love about «Misericordia» is the sudden change in writing style to make the viewer laugh. Reminded me of Deerskin (2019) and The Bra (2018). (Seen at MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024.)
